The Beauty of Misima

The Island of Gold is known for its mineral riches, however allow me to show the other side of the island Misima. As I had written in the first part, Misima, particularly Bagilina has fresh cold running rivers that are within walking distance of each other. The village is located at the edge of a steep range that leads to mount Oiatau, the highest peak in Misima. Bagilina is located at the foot of the range, it is impossible to build houses any higher up the range, hence; there is limited space. There are no playing fields or open spaces, there is no roads for vehicles, only a small track that stretches for about 10 kilometres to Ewena (the next village from Bagilina). The beauty of the place is indescribable; these are a few of the many pictures I took whilst there for Christmas holiday.

On the eve of my 30th birthday, I lost my sister Talitha in a tragic road accident, she was only 26. Like my other siblings, it was hard to digest, even more; I received news a day after the accident as I was in Panguna, and could only access Digicel by standing only at certain locations. MISIMA ISLAND (Part One)

After 17 years I finally travelled back to the island of gold, Misima. Bubu nain was waiting for us at the airport. She, Tama and small uncle Bimbo left the village at around 6:30am on the only Mulolu PMV to get to the station. By 8am they had already arrived and made their way to the airport to wait for the Airlines PNG flight that was scheduled to arrive at 1pm.   From left to right: Bubu Nain, Elizabeth and uncle Bimbo with all our luggage waiting for Mulolu It could not have come at a better time than this now that I'm a grown man going back to visit my anxiously waiting family. I just could not understand why they greet you with tears, "for goodness sake I'm not leaving yet", was what I said in my mind, but it is something you have to get used to when you have returned after a long time. Theonila's story

Nilla, comes from the heartland of Panguna in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. This cheerful character is always seen with an affectionate smile that makes her a likable person to anyone she meets. However, this has never been the case in this young woman’s past, as she reflects upon her upbringing through the struggles of 10 year war and the horrendous execution of her “redskin” father at the hands of opportunistic BRA soldiers; she recalls the struggles she and her family went through and how she never gave up her dreams to make it make it to through education. This is the story of Theonila. Theonila was born on the 4 th of September 1990 to a family of five, she was the last.
